What is a Malaysia Dependent Pass?

The Malaysia Dependent Pass is a long-term immigration pass that allows family members of foreign nationals working or studying in Malaysia to reside in the country. It is issued to spouses and children of individuals who hold an Employment Pass (EP), Student Pass, or Residence Pass.

This pass enables families to stay together while the primary pass holder fulfills their work or study obligations in Malaysia. The Dependent Pass is tied to the validity of the main pass holder's visa.

Who Can Apply for Dependent Pass?

Employment Pass Holders

Spouse and children of foreign nationals working in Malaysia under an Employment Pass (EP) with a monthly salary of RM5,000 and above.

Student Pass Holders

Spouse and children of international students studying at recognized Malaysian educational institutions under a Student Pass.

Residence Pass Holders

Spouse and children of individuals holding a Malaysia Residence Pass, including talent pass holders and long-term residents.

Eligible Family Members

Spouse

Legally married spouse of the main pass holder. Common-law partners or fiancés are NOT eligible.

Required: Valid marriage certificate

Children

Unmarried children under 21 years of age, including biological children, adopted children, and stepchildren.

Required Documents

Documents for Spouse
  • Completed application form (Form DP1)
  • Valid passport (with at least 18 months validity)
  • Recent passport-sized photographs (35mm x 50mm, white background)
  • Marriage certificate (original and certified copy)
  • Main pass holder's valid Employment Pass/Student Pass/Residence Pass
  • Main pass holder's passport copy
  • Proof of relationship (joint bank statements, photos, correspondence)
  • Medical examination report from FOMEMA-registered clinic
  • Personal bond (RM2,000) signed by main pass holder
Documents for Children
  • Completed application form (Form DP1)
  • Valid passport (with at least 18 months validity)
  • Recent passport-sized photographs (35mm x 50mm, white background)
  • Birth certificate (original and certified copy)
  • Parents' marriage certificate
  • Main pass holder's valid Employment Pass/Student Pass/Residence Pass
  • Both parents' passport copies
  • Adoption certificate (if applicable)
  • Medical examination report from FOMEMA-registered clinic (for children above 12 years)
  • Personal bond (RM500 per child) signed by main pass holder

Application Process

Employer/Institution Applies
The main pass holder's employer (for EP holders) or educational institution (for Student Pass holders) must apply for the Dependent Pass on behalf of the family member through the ESD Online System.

Submit Required Documents
Upload all required documents including passports, certificates, photographs, and proof of relationship. Ensure all documents are properly certified and meet the specifications.

Pay Application Fee
Pay the required application fee online. The fee varies depending on the dependent's nationality and the main pass holder's category.

Medical Examination
Dependent must undergo a medical examination at a FOMEMA-registered clinic in Malaysia after arrival or at designated clinics abroad before travel.

Approval & Pass Issuance
Once approved, the Dependent Pass sticker will be issued and affixed to the dependent's passport. Processing typically takes 7-14 working days.

Validity & Renewal

Validity Period

The Dependent Pass is issued for the same duration as the main pass holder's visa, up to a maximum of 5 years.

  • For EP holders: Up to 5 years
  • For Student Pass holders: Aligned with study duration
  • For Residence Pass holders: Up to validity period
Renewal Process

The Dependent Pass can be renewed as long as the main pass holder's visa remains valid and active.

  • Apply 3 months before expiry
  • Submit updated documents
  • Renewal follows same application process

Work Rights & Restrictions

Work Restrictions

Dependent Pass holders are NOT permitted to work in Malaysia. If a dependent wishes to work, they must apply for their own Employment Pass.

To Work in Malaysia:

  • Dependent must secure a job offer from a Malaysian employer
  • Employer must apply for an Employment Pass on their behalf
  • Must surrender Dependent Pass upon receiving Employment Pass

While Dependent Pass holders cannot work, they can engage in the following activities:

Study & Education

Enroll in schools, colleges, or universities without needing a separate student visa

Healthcare Access

Access medical facilities and healthcare services throughout Malaysia

Banking Services

Open bank accounts and access financial services

Travel Freedom

Enter and exit Malaysia freely during the pass validity period

Important Notes

Pass Cancellation

The Dependent Pass is automatically cancelled if the main pass holder's Employment Pass, Student Pass, or Residence Pass expires, is cancelled, or revoked. Dependents must leave Malaysia within 14 days of the main pass cancellation.

Document Authenticity

All supporting documents must be authentic and properly certified. Submission of false information or forged documents may result in application rejection, pass cancellation, and potential deportation.

Relationship Proof

Immigration authorities may request additional evidence of genuine relationships, including joint financial records, correspondence, photographs, and statutory declarations. Be prepared to provide comprehensive documentation.

Medical Requirements

All dependents must be medically fit and free from contagious diseases. Medical examinations must be conducted at FOMEMA-registered clinics. The medical report is valid for 12 months.
